Tripura: Clashes between supporters of Congress and BJP, 19 injured including State Congress Committee chief

At least 19 people, including Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) chief Birjit Sinha, were injured in a clash between Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) supporters in front of Congress Bhawan here on Sunday. Clashes broke out between workers of both the parties after the declaration of the results of the by-polls to four assembly seats in the state. Police fired tear gas shells to disperse the crowd. Significantly, in the by-elections to four assembly seats in Tripura, the BJP has won three and the Congress one seat.

Congress leader Ashish Kumar Saha said, “Congress supporters along with Sudip Roy Burman, the winning candidate from Agartala assembly seat, returned to Congress Bhavan from the counting center at 1 pm.” “While we were preparing lunch, a group of BJP supporters attacked Congress Bhawan. The Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president was hit on the head with bricks while another Congress worker Romi Mian was stabbed by BJP supporters.

He alleged that BJP supporters led by a Yuva Morcha leader pelted stones at the building and damaged several motorcycles parked outside. 3 people were admitted to the hospital

Leaders of both parties submitted memorandum to the police officer, demanding action

A police official said, “The TPCC president has been admitted to a private hospital. The Congress supporter who was stabbed is also undergoing treatment. Vishal Chakraborty, a BJP supporter, has suffered a head injury and has got 12 stitches. A Congress delegation led by Roy Burman met the West Tripura Superintendent of Police and submitted a memorandum on the incident. Sushant Chaudhary said that BJP leaders have also met police officials and demanded action against those involved in the attack on the BJP councilor and others.
