SL vs AUS 5th ODI: Australia register consolation win in 5th ODI, Sri Lanka 3-2 to win the series

Colombo. Australia registered a consolation win of 4 wickets against Sri Lanka in the 5th and final ODI at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Friday. Hosts Sri Lanka won the series 3-2. Australia got a target of 161 runs to win but they found it very difficult to reach 164 runs for 6 wickets. However, the visiting team finally managed to register victory with 63 balls to spare.

Sri Lanka had reduced Australia’s score to 50 for 4, but wicket-keeper batsman Alex Carey played an unbeaten 45-run knock and took his team to the target. Carey added 51 runs for the 5th wicket with Marnus Labuschagne and then shared an unbeaten 43-run partnership with Cameron Green for the 7th wicket. Cameron Green returned unbeaten on 25. Dunith Velalage took 3 wickets for 42 runs for Sri Lanka while Mahish Thekshana got 2 wickets. Pramod Madushan took 1 wicket in his bag.

Sri Lankan team captain Dasun Shanaka won the toss earlier and decided to bat. The team was reduced to 160 runs in 43.1 overs. For him, Chamika Karunaratne and debutant Pramod Madushan shared a 58-run partnership for the 9th wicket to take the team to this score. At one time the team’s score was 85 runs for 8 wickets, when the pair came to the crease.

Chamika hit 8 fours and 2 sixes in her innings of 75 runs in 75 balls. Pramod faced 52 balls and scored 15 runs in a restrained innings with the help of 2 fours. Apart from him, Kusal Mendis contributed 26 runs in 40 balls. He hit 3 fours in his innings. For Australia, pacers Josh Hazlewood, Kuhneman and Pat Cummins took 2-2 wickets while Glenn Maxwell and Cameron Green got 1-1 wickets.
