New Delhi. Sikkim is a mountainous region in the northeastern state of India. Snow avalanches often occur in winter. The soldiers deployed in the security of the border also keep coming in the grip of avalanches. But now the army has made preparations to avoid it. The Indian Army has installed the first Avalaunch Monitoring Radar in North Sikkim. This monitoring radar will give an alert exactly 3 seconds before the arrival of the avalanche.

This radar has been jointly installed by the Indian Army and Defense Geo Informatics and Research Establishment. It has been installed at an army post situated at an altitude of 15000 feet. This is the first such radar of its kind that will give information about it exactly three seconds before any avalanche arrives. It is believed that the loss of life and property can be prevented by installing the Avalaunch Monitoring Radar.

Significantly, there are reports of soldiers coming in the grip of avalanches from North Sikkim. In the year 2020, a group of soldiers was hit by an avalanche. 17 to 18 soldiers of this group were buried in the avalanche. Later everyone was rescued safely. In the same year, an army lieutenant colonel and a jawan were killed in an avalanche in the Luganak La area.

Avalaunch Monitoring Radar is an effective technology for easy detection of avalanches. The radar works in any weather and at any time of the day, has a range of 5 to 10 km and covers large avalanches with a single instrument. It alerts people in case of an avalanche. It can also be operated from smartphone and tablet.
