Guwahati: Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has suffered another major setback amid the ongoing battle for supremacy in Maharashtra’s ruling Shiv Sena. Higher Education Minister Uday Samant has also joined the rebel Eknath Shinde camp in the Uddhav government. He reached Guwahati on Sunday night. With this, Shinde has the support of 39 Shiv Sena MLAs. Uday is the 8th minister of Maharashtra, who has decided to go with Shinde instead of Uddhav. Surprisingly, more ministers are now in Eknath Shinde’s camp than Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray. Uddhav has only the support of 3 ministers left.
According to the report of Hindustan Times, Shiv Sena was not able to contact Uday Samant since Sunday morning. Uday reached Guwahati from Mumbai via a chartered plane on Sunday evening. He was accompanied by three other people, including his personal secretary and a Shiv Sena worker from Thane. Uday Samant is considered close to Matoshree, the residence of the Thackeray family. This is believed to be the reason that despite being new to Shiv Sena, he was given an important ministry like higher education. Now his going with Eknath Shinde is a big setback for Uddhav.
Uday Samant is the 8th minister of Maharashtra cabinet, who has decided to leave Uddhav Thackeray. Uddhav now has only one minister left from his own party Shiv Sena. That is, his son Aaditya Thackeray. Aditya is the Minister of Environment and Protocol. Apart from this, Transport Minister Anil Parab and Industries Minister Subhash Desai are with Uddhav in two other ministers. Both Parab and Desai are members of the Legislative Council. Independent Shankarrao Gadak is also a minister from Shiv Sena quota and is handling the water conservation department. One post is vacant due to the resignation of Forest Minister Sanjay Rathore.
According to HT, so far 5 cabinet ministers and 2 ministers of state have taken shelter in the Shinde camp. Apart from Shinde, Samant, the cabinet ministers include Gulabrao Patil, Sandipan Bhumre, Dadaji Bhuse. Among the ministers of state are Abdul Sattar and Shambhuraj Desai. Independents Rajendra Patil Yadavraokar and Omprakash Kadu, who were made ministers from Shiv Sena quota, have also joined the Shinde faction.
Uday Samant has been MLA for two consecutive terms from Ratnagiri on NCP ticket. He was made a minister of state in the previous Congress-NCP government. However, before the 2014 assembly elections, he had joined Shiv Sena. After that in 2018, he was made the chairman of MHADA. In 2019, Uday came as an MLA for the fourth time.
