Bengal: There may be a tussle between the Governor and Mamta Banerjee, Dhankhar appoints the Vice Chancellor

Kolkata. West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar has courted another controversy by nominating the next Vice Chancellor of Rabindra Bharati University (RBU). While the bill to nominate Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee as the Chancellor of state-run universities is awaiting her approval.

The governor is currently the ex-officio chancellor of state-run universities and the term of RBU’s current vice-chancellor Sabyasachi Basu Roy Chowdhury is about to end soon. Dhankhar has appointed Professor Mahua Mukherjee in the dance department of RBU as the next vice-chancellor.

He tweeted on Thursday that he has appointed Mukherjee as the next Vice Chancellor under Section 9(1)(b) of the Rabindra Bharati Act, 1981. The governor also attached the recommendation of the government’s search committee for the post and said he was selecting Mukherjee, whose name topped the list.

State spokesperson of the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) Kunal Ghosh reacted sharply to this, saying, “The governor has once again proved that he does not believe in democratic principles and federalism.”

Ghosh said, “The Bill passed by the West Bengal Assembly to appoint the Chief Minister to the post of Chancellor of the state universities is awaited, while the Honorable Governor has announced a name as the Vice-Chancellor of RBU. He did not even consider it necessary to take the Education Minister and the Chief Minister into confidence before this announcement.
